So I was a day late for Nanowrimo
So I was a day late for nanowrimo but here is my first couple of pages....its a little slow but this is it .....Quantity not quality
The sun flew into the attic window of the two story house where Taylor Linsley had lived all her life. Taylor was 25, graduated from college with her Masters in Education and was now going to accomplish another dream that she had sought after....Marriage and a family. Taylor's creamy blonde hair embraced the evening sun and her perfect white smile and thin pale rose lips laughed as it embraced her back. The sun was the symbol of all the joyful emotions that were rushing through her. Happiness, fulfillement, accomplishment, engagement, nervousness, anxiousness, anticipation, marriage, LOVE!!! But this isnt about her. She might hold some minute role but this is about her soon to be husband Thorney Brinks. He sits calmly, quietly, hidiing any emotion present in his body under a clean, sleek bodice of temperance, surety and tranquility. She nudges him, pushes him and giggles excitedly as she unveils her 2nd box of albums. It was Tayly's Time! He had dubbed it that. Whenever she went into a tangent about herself...it was Taylys's Time. He was patient kind and fine with the whole thing. She had to have been ignored as a child, he would think. But not now. Now as he gazed with her on the hundreds of pictures of her in gowns, with roses, with trophies, crowns or in the most picturesque pose with unimaginetively perfect lighting. Tayly's Time was going to get banned or cut back he decided. But not yet, not until after the marriage. "Let her gloat." She seemed so selffish at times. He shook his head with a smile. She looked up and kissed his thicker lips. She didnt even acknowledge her families with the greatest respect or love. Occasionally she would say, "O yeah, my moms standing there in the corner--shes kinda hard to see, ya knows she s just watching." or "Oh yeah my dads the one taking the picture!" and least commonly, "My sister....she kinda happened to be there. I LOVE her dont get me wrong...but doesnt her smile ya know...take away from the picture. I dunno I really cant wait for you to meet her though!"
"Cassandra! Get down here! They're going to be here in an hour and we still have to get the house ready!" The voice os Mrs. Linsley bellowed causing the young girl upstairs to groan in annoyance. Cassandra, or Cassie as she preffered to be called, shut the big book
"Stories written by Edgar Allen Poe", placing it under her bed. She stretched, not getting excited about seeing her sister or meeting her new fiance. Taylor was perfect, her parent's favorite and they were going out of there way to make a perfect dinner. Cassandra was dressed in sweatpants and a tanktop as she bounded down the stairs in time to see her mother fussing over a large pot roast. Her mother turned to her frowning instantly. "Cassandra Linsley! Go get changed! That pretty red dress is hanging in your closet. Now go, they could arrive early." Her mother scolded before turning back to finish fixing dinner. Cassie grumbled under her breath as she trudged back up the stairs. She hated dressing up but she didn't have much of a choice. The dress her mother had picked out for her was short and revealing, something a mother shouldn't have chosen. Cassie took thirty minutes to change, do her hair and makeup. She looked in the mirror at the beautiful girl looking back at her. Cassie had long curly black hair, striking violet eyes, and a perfect body that she liked to keep hidden. "This isn't me..." She muttered staring at the stranger in the mirror.
"So are you excited baby?" Taylor whined, in what she thought was her cute voice, with big sappy eyes that she thought was even more cute. Thorney was still silent, he opened her door and allowed her to get situated before he leaned over and kissed her lightly on her lips. "Do you want me to be excited?" He typically answered her back with a question, he had patience for these back and forth games, she didnt. Instead she would really cry and throw a fit at the least bit of disagreeance or annoyance. "Of course I am. I'm just," he paused to breathe in hesitantly, then closed her door as he walked away saying, "nervous." He walked around the car and opened the drivers door softly, only to be interrupted by the pleading voice of Taylor,"What did you say baby? What did you say you were?" "Nervous....Taylor...Nervous." "There's no need to---" she slowly began before he interrupted. "I havent met your mother or father before. You've told me nothing about your family. " "I told you they live on two blocks down the road." "You havent even told me their first names. I asked you that and you told me what the meaning of your name was for the fifth or sixth time." "I bet you cant even remember that." " I asked you what your mother liked in her kitchen....and all you could do was daydream about the kitchen in the house and how you want to remodel it. Thats a perfectly nice kitchen and house your parents gave you I dont understand why you have to be so...needy." "That house is over 20 years old Thorney!" "And you never talk about your sister. You know the most I think I know about your family, is that they have a very self centered Taylor in it." "Im sorry you know I know Im self centered." "Oh of course you know that." They drived around a couple of corners of the little subdivison before arriving at the Linsley's home. "Have you been hiding them from me or me from them?" Thorney looked intently into her eyes. "No....I just wanted everything to be a suprise." They kissed. What else was he to do. They held hands as they walked up to the front porch. And smiled gaily at one another as they rung the door bell and waited for it to be opened. Taylor smiling like a dumb excited labrador and Thorney smiling in pain....I love this dog?
Cassie heard her mother and sighed, annoyed as she grudginly exited her room and walked downstairs. The dress used to be Taylor's and was tight and fitting, the type of clothes that Taylor usually wore. Cassie saw her father who was trying to sneak a roll. "Dad...If mom catches you she will make you starve." Cassie said, not really joking for her mother would do such a thing. She groaned as she finally entered the front hall and came into view of her sister and her fiance.
Thorney's face was pulled into a ridiculus smile. Oh my gosh....this is embarressing. What was so embarrassing was that, he and Taylor did not live more than a cross hair away from her parents and that they had never met. Taylor hadnt visited with them since she moved into her parents house. And worst of all her parents never called or beckoned or begged her to come over.
"Oh! Milton! Your daughter's here with her beau! Cassandra! Get down here right this minute!!" Mrs. Linley hollared, running around frantically as she removed the oven mits and apron. She quickly ran to the door, a huge welcoming smile on her aged face as she opened it up. "Oh Taylor, darling. You grow more beautiful every time I see you!" She gushed, giving her daughter a hug.
"Im Thorney. Its wonderful to meet you Mrs. Linsley."He stuck out his hand to recieve hers but Thorney was dragged in to recieve a hug from the mother. Curiously he looked around the house quickly. He resumed his place next to Taylor who was smiling giddily and bouncing about.
"Where's DAD!" She screeched as she pushed past her mom. "Daddy!!!!"
She ran past her sister into the arms of her father.
"Taylor! Don't crush your father!" Mrs. Linsley said, running after her daughter and leaving Cassie and Thorney alone. Cassie didn't say anything, not the social type. She wasn't surprised that Taylor had simply ignored her. Her sister had always been like that, never paying much attention to Cassie. When they were younger she would tell Cassie that she had been a mistake and mom and dad never meant to give birth to her. They felt sorry for her so they never gave her up for adoption. Cassie didn't believe that and didn't really care what she said. She glanced at Thorney, not surprised that her sister had found a handsome one. Taylor had always been popular and never had trouble finding guys, unlike Cassie who simply didn't care.
Thorney gained a couple of glances at the sister before her mother's body blocked that view. He was still waiting in the doorway. He was more reserved and would simply be a tree in a room, just observing what was around him. "CASSIE!" Her sister yelled a loud shrill voice. "Where were you hiding at!" Taylor grabbed her sisters head and plunged it into her much bigger chest. Taylor was taller, bodier, curvier and more gorgeous that Cassie. But this of course was all according to Cassie and those who feared to go against her views. As she hugged her she continued. "Is that my dress....I cant believe I left that here. Oh well I guess it suits you better my boobs wouldnt fit in there anymore." Taylor purposely prolonged the "oo"s in boobs just annoy her sister.
Cassie flailed as Taylor grabbing her, pushing her sister away. "Yes, well as you've probably heard bigger boobs are usually the sign of plastic surgery." Cassie said, shooting an insult back to her sister. "Cassandra! How dare you speak to your sister like that?! Apologize right now!" Her mother said. She hadn't scolded perfect Taylor of course, just her. It used to be like that during their childhood. Cassie plasted a fake smile on her face. "I must give you my humblest of apologies, dear sister." Cassie said, sarcasm dripping out of her voice before she headed into the dining room to take her seat.
"Cassie." His voice was low but audible enough for her to hear him. "Or Cassandra...which do you perfer?" He continued softly. For the moment he felt sympathetique towards her. He waited for her response maybe it was rude for him to call out to her like he did, but the mother and father were wrapped up in Taylor. Matter of fact the three of them went and sat down together in the Den where they chatted loudly about their Daughter and her present achievements. He thought for sure his tall lean figure would stick out. He wore the pale yellow button up just to "exsist" a little more in the eyes of others. Still he was ignored. Maybe taylor wasnt keeping him a secret, it could have possibly been that her parents didnt even pry. Maybe they were just glad to have passed the trouble along to another man. Thorney didnt mind. He loved her.
Cassie glanced up, a little surprised that a man of Taylor's was actually speaking to her. "Call me Cassie. I don't like the name Cassandra." She said, thinking that was explanation enough. She sighed as she filled her plate with food, not caring that she was suppossed to wait for the others. She was hungry and she wasn't going to let Taylor and her parents hold her back. She glanced at Thorney, offering him the roast beef before she started to eat.
"Um...dont we need to wait on the others." Thorney tilted his head back over to the den where the three were chattering away. Cassie was much different than Taylor. She was nonchalant, apathetic, sassy and no doubt reckless...though that he wasnt sure of quite yet. He didnt normally like to make prejudgements about people he had just met, but Cassie kinda let you know everything about her in the first few moments of interaction. She was gorgeous. Thorney didnt care much for the thought of guilt for admiring another woman's beauty. In fact Cassie was a nice change up from her sister. He looked back over to Taylor who was practically talking over her parents and who were talking over her. It was practically a shaken birdcage in there. "Where are you from..." Thorney quietly joked with Cassie who was still eyeing and placing food on her plate. "So far you dont seem like any of em..."
"Trust me, when my parents start talking to Taylor they won't stop blabbing away for atleast a half hour." Cassie said, taking a bite of the pot roast. It was a little dry and she had trouble chewing it but she was too hungry to care. She raised an eyebrow at Thorney's next question. She took a swig of water before she answered him. "Yeah, it doesn't look like I belong in this family does it? I feel like I was switched at birth but whatever. So, Thorney...why choose my sister? There's a lot of other, less faker girls out there." Cassie said, taking another sip of her water. She wasn't really enjoying the converstation but it wasn't bad either...better than any conversation between her and her family.
“Well your sister for starters was drunk off her ass. So I never saw a mask…the minute I did I was like, “Whose this drunk girl trying to show me who she is.” Honestly, I’ve never been with another girl before, your sister was my first in many respects.” Thorney stopped talking. It was rare for him to talk that much, hell he hardly even talked about himself. And then there was the fact that he didn’t feel that cassie would give a shit whether or not he had never had sex before meeting Taylor a year ago.
Cassie had stopped eating for a moment, staring at him rather oddly. "You hadn't had sex before my sister? Wow...that's a change. Taylor usually finds the trashiest guys. Well I must say she did good for herself, at least this time." Cassie said, giving him a genuine but small smile. She heard her mom talking and it was coming this way.
"C'mon Taylor, darling. Let's go eat dinner and then we can continue our talk." She stated.
"Cassie this is awful..." Thorney commented across the table to Cassie.
Taylor walked in on the remark and smacked his arm. "Thorney!" She hissed. "Mom you have to excuse him, He's a WORLD CLASS CHEF." She looked at her mother shaking her head.
"CASSIE!!! You started without us!" Taylor was oblivious, it was quite clear they had been eating but she was too busy being caught up in herself that she didnt even notice. "Youre such a---"
"Taylor calm down." Thorney interrupted her again. He often had to interrupt her, what she would ever say, would for the most part be unneccesary or wrong.
Cassie sighed as she stood up, placing her napkin on the table. "I already got my fill while you were chatting away in there. I am going to excuse myself now. It was nice to meet you Thorney." Cassie said blandly, ignoring her mother's angry complaints as she bounded up the stairs, slamming her bedroom door shut. "Oh! I am so sorry. She is such a trouble maker! She never listens to anything I say." Cassie's mother said. Cassie changed clothes, putting on jeans and a tshirt before she plopped down on the bed. She took her book out again and started to read and letting the conversation from downstairs go to the back of her mind.
"Actually I didnt mind her...please excuse my comment...I tend to overly critical about food and food alone." Thorney stood up and waited for the rest to sit down before he resumed his seat. "I've only had one bite so I can still eat with ya'll."
"No you cant."Taylor looked creuly over to Thorney. "You've had your share with that brat."
"Cassie?" Thorney looked over suprised at Taylor with questioning eyes. "She is not a brat, she's alright I havent got to talk to her and you've never told me a bit about her." Thorney shook his head and locked on to the Parents. "I apologize if I sounded rude I just was enjoying my conversation with Cassie. I hope she doesnt storm off like that often."
Taylor's eyes shined brightly and a dumb smile passed over her face.
"Thorney its actually great that you're getting along with her! Now you can ask her the favor I wanted to ask her."
"You mean the one you said she wouldnt do for you...and gee I wonder why?" Thorney shook his head. "Can we eat?"
Taylor made a small grunt and began eating her food. "I hope you and dad will ignore Thorney's attitude for the moment. "I had him in the attic all afternoon. His allergies are probably bothering him."
That was a lie, but she always lied. She would even smile fakely in pictures just to make them look better. But that was her. Taylor the sugar coater.
"Barbra, pass the peas." Cassie's father said, causing his wife to glare at him before she gave him the vegetables he had asked for. She turned back to Thoney with a smile on her face. "Don't worry about it. I was in a hurry and I must have rushed through dinner." Barbra said, taking a seat. She looked between her daughter and Thorney curiously. "What favor are you going to ask Cassie? I'm sure whatever it is she would be more than happy to do it." Barbra said, not really knowing her other daughter that well. Cassie would have to be forced to do anything for Taylor.
“Yeah right mom…Cassie,” Taylor paused to swallow, “hates me! She hates me.” She shortly continued.
“A lot of people hate you Taylor not just Cassie.” Thorney laughed slightly at her before she glared at him.
“I want her to play that song she wrote for us at the wedding.”
It was odd for Taylor to let anyone have the lime light besides her self.
